What are the indicators to look out for when someone is having an allergic reaction to nail products.
♦️ 1. Onycholysis
Onycholysis refers to the separation of the nail from the nail bed. This condition can occur due to trauma to to the nail plate or allergic reactions to nail products, particularly those containing harsh chemicals or allergens in high percentages such as HEMA (2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate). Individuals may notice a discolouration, whitening of the nail where the smile line looks as if it has expanded towards the cuticle or lifting of the nail, which can be both unsightly and uncomfortable. In severe cases, onycholysis can lead to infections, making it crucial to seek medical advice if this symptom arises. Where the nail has detached from the nail bed, clients will lose this part of the nail which will expose the nail bed further.
♦️ 2. Hyperkeratosis
Hyperkeratosis is characterized by the thickening of the skin or nails. In the context of nail products, allergic reactions can trigger this condition, leading to rough, bumpy surfaces on the nails, under the nails or around the cuticles. This thickening can be accompanied by pain or discomfort and may require treatment to manage symptoms and restore normal nail health.
♦️ 3. Splinter Hemorrhages
Splinter hemorrhages are tiny, linear bruises that appear under the nails, resembling splinters. These occur when small blood vessels break, often as a result of trauma or allergic reactions. In the case of nail products, the use of harsh chemicals or improper application or curing may lead to this symptom. While splinter hemorrhages are generally not serious, they can indicate underlying issues that may need to be addressed.
♦️4. Chemical burns
Chemical burns or bruising around or on the nails can also occur as a reaction to nail products. This may be due to trauma, but in some cases, allergic reactions can lead to increased sensitivity and the subsequent development of bruises. Clients or nail techs with existing allergies may find their skin more prone to damage, resulting in noticeable bruising.
♦️5. Rashes
Localized rashes are one of the most common signs of an allergic reaction to nail products. These can appear as red, itchy patches on the skin surrounding the nails and may be accompanied by swelling or blistering. Rashes can result from direct contact with allergens in nail products, such as adhesives or polishes. In some cases, the rash may spread beyond the immediate area, leading to discomfort across the body-and requiring treatment.
♦️6. Breathing and Nasal Problems
Allergic reactions to nail products can also manifest as respiratory issues. Individuals may experience symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing or difficulty breathing, particularly if they are sensitive to fumes or dust generated during the application process. Those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma, may be particularly vulnerable to these reactions, highlighting the importance of proper ventilation and protective measures in nail salons.
♦️ 7. Eye Problems
Exposure to allergens in nail products can lead to eye problems as well. Symptoms may include redness, itching, watering, or swelling of the eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis can occur if a person inadvertently touches their eyes after handling nail products, after having their nails done or if fumes irritate the eyes during application. It is essential to seek prompt medical attention if eye symptoms develop, as they can lead to more serious complications if left untreated.
♦️ 8. Swelling
Swelling is another common symptom of allergic reactions to nail products. This can occur around the nail area, such as the cuticles, or it may affect the fingers or hands more broadly. Swelling is often accompanied by redness and tenderness, indicating an inflammatory response to allergens in the products used. Severe swelling may require medical intervention to manage pain and prevent further complications.
By understanding the potential allergic reactions associated with nail products clients and nail techs can make informed choices and prioritize their health and well-being.
